War Horse the movie starts off in 1912, with the main character, Albert Naracott or Albie for short, looking at a mother horse giving birth to a Foal. The foal was half-thoroughbred and and was still wild. However, a few years later, the foal, that is now the horse, was sent to an auction and Albie’s father, Ted Naracott, was fascinated by the sight of the horse, which is the foal and bought him for 30 guineas. The landlord, Lyons, wanted the horse to but lost to Ted because he desired to spite Lyons and retain his pride. He bought the horse, which is colt for 30 guineas which means, he is unable to pay the rent to Lyons. Much to the dismay of his wife, Rose Naracott, he is still willing to keep the colt and Albie is willing to train him to plough and soon, the colt became Albie’s best friend and is named, Joey. Lyons threatened Ted on taking his farm away if he does not pay 30 guineas to him by autumn. Ted was shown in wanting to kill Joey because he coudn’t pay to Lyons but, Rose stopped him. Albie trains Joey to plough and all his neighbours were astonished on the sight of Joey ploughing and preparing a field to plant it with turnips. Rose then showed the Regimental Pennant that Ted received during the war and Albie took it with him. That night, a storm came and ruined the field, causing the Naracott to remain hopeless.
The World War I was about to start and because Ted wasn’t able to pay the landlord. He sold Joey to a young cavalry officer named Captain Nicholls. Albie came and pleads the captain to get Joey back but Nicholls can only promise that he will keep Joey safe in his care and will try to return it to him as soon as the war ends. Joey is sent for military operation and befriended a horse named Topthorn, a black horse who is also trained for the military. Topthorn is under the command of Major Jamie Stewart while, Joey is under the command of Captain Nicholls. The English then attacked the Germans while they’re undefended. However, they weren’t exactly. The Germans prepared machine guns and shot the English soldiers. Captain Nicholls and most of the other soldiers were killed and some of the horses made it out alive including, Joey and Topthorn.
A young soldier named Michael convinces one of the soldiers to take Joey and Topthorn to the ambulance wagon, and he and his brother, Gunther drive them. Michael was assigned as a front but Gunther didn’t want to go so, he took Joey and Topthorn with him and took Michael from the front army. They stayed in a windmill but was caught by the German army and they had their death penalty. Joey and Topthorn wasn’t caught by them so they were alive.
The next morning, Joey and Topthorn was found by a young French girl named Emillie and she took care of them. She wanted to ride them but she has a kind of disease that disables her to do so. Her Granpa does not allow her too. Nonetheless, she has the priveledge to ride the horses on her birthday as a gift from her Grandpa. She rode Joey and Emillie raced to the top of the hill. When Emillie didn’t return immediately, Topthorn raced off toward the hills and Emillie’s grandfather follows. He sees that she has run into the German soldiers who ransacked their farm earlier. The German soldiers take the horses, despite Emilie's protests. The Grandfather keeps the pennant. Joey and Topthorn are put to the German artillery and is under the care of Private Henglemann.
By 1918, Albert fights alongside his best friend, Andrew in the Second Battle of the Somme, under the command of David Lyons. Some of the soldiers that were involved in the battle made it through the deserted German trench and some of them died.
Joey and Topthorn, under the hard service of the German army, survived years in there but Topthorn died of exhaustion and dies. Henglemann was taken away from Joey and Topthorn and leaving Joey to run away. Joey ran into the no-man’s land but was caught in a wire and he was unable to break out.
Corporal Colin, from the England army saw Joey, being mistaken for a cow, caught in a wire and waves a white flag as a sign that he will give “no harm”. In his attempt to rescue Joey, he met a German soldier named Peter and they both helped Joey. They flip a coin on deciding who will take Joey and Colin wins. He guides Joey to the British trench and have formed an unexpected friendship with Peter.
Colin then went to the army doctor to heal Joey’s bruised legs but, he said that the injury is serious and they don’t have a vet. Therefore, the doctor instructs Sergeant Fry to shoot Joey to end his suffering. Meanwhile, Albert was seen being treated because he was temporarily blinded. Andrew was killed by the gas attack so he didn’t made it. Albert heard about the “miraculous horse” that was rescued and so, called Joey with his call and Joey recognizes the call and approach Albert. Albert then explained that he raised Joey and explains the exact identity of the horse. Having marks covered in mud, the army doctor washed the mud away and was astonished with exact description of what Albert has described of Joey. Therefore, Joey wasn’t killed.
Albert was then not blinded anymore and the war ended on November 11, 1918 on the 11th hour. He then found out that the only horses that were going to be shipped home are the officers’ horse and Joey needs to be sent to the auction. However, his fellow soldiers help him to get Joey back. They then bid against a French butcher, reaching 30 pounds but, entered a bid of 100 pounds as Emilie’s granfather was bid against. The grandfather then, took the ownership of Joey. Albert pleads to get Joey back but, the grandfather refuses to, for the sake of his granddaughter’s memory.
When the grandfather was about to leave, he was surprised to see Joey returning back to Albert’s side. The grandfather then, took out a military pennant and ask Albert if he knew what it is. Albert’s recognition of the pennant convinces that Joey is really Albert’s horse and returns Joey to his care. When the grandfather was about to leave, Albert asks who his granddaughter’s name was and he stated that it is Emilie.
The final scene shows Albert returning back to his farm, where he was greeted by his mother, Rosie and father, Ted showing respect to his beloved son and hugged him for the first time shown in the movie.
The themes that was shown in the movie was basically war, loyalty, friendship and trust. The film is focused mainly during the World War I and there were a lot of war scenes shown. The war also seperated Joey and Albert but reunited and their friendship bond grew. Joey was also loyal to Albert, despite having a lot of people taking care of him. Before seperating, Albert promised to Joey that they would meet again and take him back to his farm. This happened and they went back to Albert’s family farm.
